Emily Mariko’s Viral Salmon Bowl (How to Make It at Home)

Emily Mariko’s salmon rice bowl took over TikTok for good reason — it’s simple, comforting, and somehow feels elevated with barely any effort. What started as a leftover salmon moment quickly became one of the most recreated meals on the internet, and honestly? It deserves the hype.

This is one of those recipes that’s more about the method than strict measurements. It’s flexible, forgiving, and perfect for busy days when you want something nourishing without cooking a full meal. The combination of warm rice, flaky salmon, creamy Kewpie mayo, and that salty-spicy drizzle hits every time.

Why This Bowl Works

Tyler absolutely loves this salmon bowl and still asks for it regularly. It’s one of those meals that somehow never gets old, no matter how many times we make it. The flavors are simple but so satisfying, and once you’ve had it once, you kind of always have it in the back of your mind as an easy go-to.

Most of the time, this bowl comes together when we have leftover rice or salmon in the fridge, which makes it even better. It’s perfect for those nights when you want something comforting but don’t feel like starting from scratch. That said, there are plenty of times we’ll make everything fresh just because we’re craving it — that’s how good it is.

Even when we do make it fresh, this meal still comes together in under 20 minutes. It’s low effort, high reward, and feels like one of those recipes that fits into real life. Cozy, filling, and endlessly craveable — no wonder it went viral in the first place.

Materials

  • 1 cup cooked white rice
  • 2 salmon fillets cooked
  • kewpie mayo to taste
  • sriracha to taste
  • soy sauce to taste
  • ½ avocado sliced
  • green onion sliced
  • sesame seeds
  • seaweed snacks (nori)

Instructions

  • If using left overs, add cooked rice and salmon to a microwave-safe bowl. Place an ice cube on top of the rice and cover loosely with parchment paper or a microwave lid. Microwave until warmed through.
  • If making fresh – I season my salmon fillet generously with salt, pepper and paprika and sear it over medium heat with olive oil until cooked to 140℉.
I use Calrose (sushi) Rice. 1 ¾ cup water with 1 cup rice and a tsp of salt in a pot, bring to a boil, then lower the heat to low and simmer covered for 15 minutes.
  • Use a fork to flake the salmon into the rice.
  • Drizzle soy sauce over the bowl, then add Kewpie mayo and sriracha to taste.
  • Top with sesame seeds, sliced avocado, and green onions.
  • Scoop the salmon rice into seaweed snacks and enjoy.

Notes

  • This recipe works best with leftover salmon and rice but is just as delicious made fresh.
  • Add cucumber, chili crisp, or pickled ginger for extra flavor and texture.
  • Adjust soy sauce and sriracha to taste.
